Lovely Tent Stitch Pillow

Lot 892 Anderson & Garland Ltd. Newcastle Auction June 14th, 2016

This antique pillow is a set of tent stitch motifs, possibly of the early 17th century remounted on a black velvet pillow. I have a set of 17th century tent stitch motifs from a set of curtains and they show multiple backs to them - so they were remounted multiple times. I haven't yet decided what I will do with them - but this is a lovely idea with a new or old set!

My Background and Passions

I've been embroidering or 'building with a needle' since I was four and started teaching embroidery to adults when I was 12. I went to MIT and got a PhD in engineering and helped to start a field called Electronic Textiles. I have always loved history as well and took some crazy-cool course work about using materials science as an archeological tool. That is the basis of my work in embroidery. I see my embroidery teaching as one facet of being a historian of textile materials culture.

Today, I balance three jobs - Thistle Threads, an engineering practice, and am a partner in Tokens and Trifles. It is crazy, but when you have many loves it is just what you do. Much of this is an outgrowth of how I think, which is a bit unusual since I am dyslexic.

In this blog you will notice themes that align with my passions: historic embroidery, teaching engineering to today's youth, and understanding different learning styles. In my off time, I coach a championship robotics team of teens as well as a team of elementary kids. I am really proud of them! Helping to develop E-Textile projects for summer camps to encourage girls in STEM is another activity that makes my plate pretty full.
